DMeetUp
Convergence between CBL and D&I processes
3 October 2022
15:00 - 16:00 CE(S)T
In the DMeetUp on the 3rd of October, 2022 with Vincent Merk, we were fortunate to be able to dive into his research and learn about some of Vincent’s life work. Vincent shared with us “Convergence between CBL and D&I processes”.
We reviewed what diversity (cognitive and identity types) and intersectionality mean and how to create inclusion with a clear action (diversity is a fact, inclusion is an act).
Vincent explained what challenge-based learning (CBL) is all about in higher education: CBL is an innovative educational approach that places resolving open-ended, real-life challenges at the core of students’ learning.
Where does CBL ideally take place? In the international classroom or in an innovation space like at Eindhoven University of Technology. We then examined the 3 steps CBL is about: engage, investigate, and act, further focused on the framework, methodology and process of CBL which, along with D&I actions, can lead to developing a sense of belonging within the group. By extending the paradigm the ultimate level, wellbeing (individual and collective, physical, and mental), can be reached.
Vincent demonstrated that there is a clear convergence between both processes when applied properly. D&I policymakers and trainers need to be involved from the very beginning of the CBL process to make it truly inclusive, and all collaborate throughout the learning process.
In a nutshell, this formula showcases the whole integration process: Challenge-based learning (CBL) is about IQ (general intelligence, cognitive and intellectual abilities) and EQ (emotional intelligence, personal and social competences) and when adding CQ (cultural intelligence, cultural sensitivity and intercultural competence), it leads to diversity and inclusion (D&I) and ultimately to wellbeing (WB):
So CBL (IQ + EQ) + CQ = D&I à WB
