SIG Migration Onboarding: How We All Can Support Volunteers and Forcibly Displaced Persons

The leadership of SIETAR Europa’s Special Interest Group (SIG) on Migration and Refugee issues invites you to this free one-day workshop to explore how SIETARians can support volunteers and forcibly displaced persons (FDPs), to exchange approaches and network with SIETARians who are already engaged in such work and to provide some concrete training activity examples that can support volunteers and FDPs (e.g., IncluKIT).

Our Objectives:
1) Identifying the needs of volunteers and FDPs;
2) Becoming familiar with existing SIETAR initiatives and existing resources to create your own local initiative;
3) Creating a strong network within the SIG Migration group which will be used as a platform for future resource exchanges, learning and support.

Who should Join Us:
Our target group for this workshop is anyone who is already involved in intercultural awareness or competence work with volunteers and/or FDPs, any SIETARians who would like to get involved as well as any NGO/charity that is interested to collaborate with SIETARians on this issue.

Workshop Background:
There is a pressing need for SIETAR to channel its expertise in cultural and intercultural communication and competence to step in and provide expert advice to volunteers and FDPs across Europe. Several local SIETAR but also individual initiatives exist, yet a platform to exchange best practices as well as support others in creating such initiatives is currently lacking. This workshop will be the first of its kind to connect all those interested in the third sector with the SIG Migration as an umbrella platform.

Anne-Claude Lambelet is a seasoned intercultural trainer. A past President of SIETAR Switzerland, she acted as intercultural expert in the joint project SIETAR Switzerland conducted with the Swiss University Students’ Union Perspectives Studies Program. This program involved dyads of refugee and swiss students at 18 universities and colleges of advanced education. An external stakeholder for the FORTHEM IncluKIT european project, she is a co-leader for SIETAR Europa’s Special Interest Group (SIG) on Migration and Refugee issues.

Eila Isotalus is an experienced trainer working since 2005 through her company Unidos Ltd. in intercultural competence development for organisations for groups ranging from teachers to doctors, from HR personnel and multicultural team leaders to officials working with migrants. Eila received her Masters degree in Intercultural Communications and International Relations from the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. For her PhD, Eila examines the asylum reception in Finland. As a member of SIETAR UK she is involved in the project RAAS project team.

Dr Katharina Addington-Lefringhausen has co-created and supported the establishment of this workshop. She is an Assistant Professor in Psychology at Heriot-Watt University, Scotland, and the current director of Community Relations at SIETAR UK. Moreover, Katharina is the co-leader of the SIETAR UK RAAS initiative and of SIG Migration at SIETAR Europa as well as an external stakeholder for the FORTHEM IncluKIT european project. In these roles, she supported the development of this workshop.
