Exclusive Webinar w/ Helen Spencer-Oatey

Dear SIETAR Europa Members,

We are delighted to invite you to a thought-provoking and insightful webinar led by renowned intercultural communication expert Helen Spencer-Oatey.

Over 30 years ago, Jan Blommaert famously asked, “How much culture is there in intercultural communication?” Today, that question resonates more than ever. In this exclusive session, Helen Spencer-Oatey revisits this critical inquiry in light of today’s globalised and complex cultural landscape.

Helen will explore:
🔹 What counts as an ‘intercultural incident’?
🔹 The strengths and limits of interpretive approaches
🔹 The introduction of her TRIPS framework – a practical, comprehensive model grounded in relationship management and rapport from pragmatics
🔹 How TRIPS can be applied for real-world professional development
🔹 Templates and tools for reflective intercultural analysis

This webinar promises to deepen your understanding of intercultural dynamics and provide tangible tools for your work and practice.

Helen Spencer-Oatey is Emeritus Professor of Applied Linguistics/Intercultural Communication at the University of Warwick and Managing Director of GlobalPeople Consulting Ltd. (GPC).  Much of her early career was spent in the East Asia and the culture and communication challenges she experienced sparked her interest in rapport, especially in contexts of diversity. Her academic background is in both social psychology and pragmatics and she has published extensively at the interface of these two disciplines. In addition to many journal articles, she has published a number of books, including Culturally Speaking (Bloomsbury 2000/2008), Intercultural Interaction (with Franklin, Palgrave, 2009), Intercultural Politeness: Managing Relations across Cultures (with Kádár, Cambridge University Press, 2021), and Global Fitness for Global People (with Franklin & Lazidou, Castledown 2022). She explains the TRIPS approach in her latest book, Making Working Relationships Work (with Lazidou, Castledown 2024). Helen has developed a wide range of diagnostic and training resources which have been used extensively internationally.
